10 Days and 24 Provinces, China’s Visa-Free Transit Policy
The National Immigration Administration issued an Announcement on Further Relaxing and Optimizing Visa-Free Transit Policy for Foreign Nationals on 17 December, to extend the permitted stay for eligible foreign travelers.
China has tripled the amount of time visitors can spend in the country without a visa in yet another move to entice more foreign tourists.
The National Administration of Immigration announced the country will expand its visa-free layover period from the original 72/144 hours to 240 hours across the board.
Effective immediately, 21 additional ports (from the original 39 ports to 60 ports) have been designated for visa-free entry and exit, and the areas in which transit travelers can stay have been expanded.
After the implementation of the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, eligible citizens from 54 countries, can enter China visa-free from any of the 60 open ports in the 24 provinces with valid international documents and interline passenger tickets with specified dates and seats when transiting to a third country or region and stay within the allowed areas for visa-free transit travelers for no more than 240 hours.
During their stay, transit visa-free travelers may engage in tourism, business, visiting, family visits, and other activities. In contrast, activities such as work, study, and news reporting that require prior approval should be carried out with the necessary visas in advance.
